So the latest cancer awareness initiative to hit the ground is the 'cock in a sock' campaign, which "...involves nude men putting socks on their penises ala the Red Hot Chili Peppers to raise money for testicular and prostate cancers."Reactions are mixed...some love it, not least because most of the guys posting photos obviously spend quite a lot of their time at the gym, and have - from what you can tell with a sock over it - big cocks (the cynic might say that some of these guys are posting because it is a morally acceptable way to show off their bodies and their manhood, even though the latter is covered...although I would say that most of those sort of guys don't have qualms showing off their bodies at any time). Others are not quite so enthusiastic about the whole thing and claim that it really does nothing to raise awareness and that - much like some of the breast cancer campaigns - the sexualisation of such issues trivialises them and makes a mockery of the people who have gone through hell with, and died from, these illnesses. It also raises the question of what about those cancers that don't have the advantage of being able to be tied to sexual imagery in order to 'raise awareness' and get publicity. Can you imagine a campaign for bowel cancer along the lines of, 'Tossin' salad for cancer awareness!!' (no I didn't make that one up, someone else did). What are your thoughts about all of this?
